Robert "Bob" Szulkin
(1935 – 2016)
Our dear colleague and friend Bob Szulkin recently passed away. Bob was one of the founding and long time member of the Board of the National Center for Jewish Film.
He was immensely helpful in assisting our Center obtain an extensive and invaluable collection of early Russian films of Jewish content. In addition Bob provided English translations for the films for our restorations and was our "go to expert" on everything related to Russian films. His generosity, knowledge, wit, humor, warmth, wisdom, and love will be sorely missed.
One of the important restorations our Center accomplished, Lang ist der Weg aka Long is the Road was overseen by Bob. Bob spent a number of years in the DP camps after the war. This film deals with the experiences of both Pollish and German survivors in a DP camp (Landsberg). Ironically, I will be showing that film in the "Film and the Holocaust" course I am teaching this week. I can think of no better tribute to Bob than to witness the 18 students in this class view and discuss one of the important films he so graciously helped save and restore.
